WINERIES
Margaret River is a first class wine region that incorporates over 200 vineyards & 80 wineries each with their own ambience & character. Brilliant wines are created here such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and more recently has Margaret River has been setting the standard for fantastic Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc's. Shiraz has been all the rage with heaps of plantings in the last ten years. However, it's the classic variety of Cabernet Sauvignon that most winemakers aspire to make their mark.
The classic maritime climate that this region exhibits, means we enjoy long, dry summers with a cooling sea breeze off the coast which enables the vines and fruit to recover over night. This gives a long ripening season so the fruit can reach optimum ripeness. We also get relatively little rain during this time which can effect fruit quality. With the season resulting in excellent vintages (more often than not) the wines exhibit classic varietal characters:
• Cabernet Sauvignon - Rich, dark and vibrant in colour the cab sav can produce an aroma of dark cherries, mint and leather with a hint of cedar. The flavours on the palate vary from ripe cherries, dark berries and plums with a velvety, lingering finish.
• Chardonnay - bright golden hues, with hints of cashews, buttered toast and melon on the nose. The flavours will exhibit a full mouth feel with ripe fruit flavours of peach and melon and the toasted oak is not overbearing.
• Semillon/Sauvignon Blanc - bright and clear the colour often has greenish hues. The nose is fresh with hints of lime, citrus and fresh mown grass. The flavour is crisp and dry, with citrus often being the dominating component, making this wine an ideal summertime accompaniment to most meals.
